At least 22 soldiers were killed in an attack on a base of local security forces in Afghanistan. The raid in the province of Sabul, in the south of the country, had started just hours before the Persian New Year, Nourus, today, a provincial council said. Several security forces are still missing. It is unclear whether they have joined the attackers or are hiding from them.

The attack occurred about 15 kilometers from the provincial capital on the expressway between Kandahar and the capital Kabul. The base was run jointly by Afghan police officers and soldiers. The raid occurred a day after Defense Minister Asadullah Khalid announced that the Afghan army was about to give up its purely defensive stance on the conflict with the militant Islamist Taliban.
