There were riots in Beirut for the second night in a row. Lebanese security forces used tear gas and water cannons against protesters again yesterday. Dozens of people were injured. The protests have been going on since mid-October. They are directed against the country’s political elite and led to Saad al-Hariri’s resignation as Prime Minister at the end of October.

It was announced yesterday that Hariri may be reappointed head of government. President Michel Aoun wants to consult MPs today. According to Hariri, he is striving for a government made up of technocrats.

Since Hariri’s resignation, efforts to create a new cabinet have been stuck in a cul-de-sac. The triggers for the protests include rising living costs.
