At least 15 people died in a passenger jet crash in Kazakhstan on Friday. Around 100 people were on board the aircraft of the Kazakh airline Bek Air, as reported by the Kazakh agency Kazinform.

According to the airport, more than 60 people are said to have survived. The Fokker 100 machine crashed into a concrete wall and into a two-story building in an inhabited area and broke.

According to the Almaty city council, another 17 inmates with serious injuries were hospitalized. The first local media reports after the accident had mentioned nine dead and nine injured. According to the Kazakh Ministry of Transport, the plane had quickly lost altitude shortly after taking off from the airport in the city of Almaty.

According to the emergency agency in the Central Asian country, there were 93 passengers and five crew members on board. The plane was to fly from Almaty to the capital Nur-Sultan (formerly called Astana), some 1,200 kilometers away.

Survivors: Like in a movie

A survivor said she heard an awful sound before the plane lost altitude. „It was like in a movie: screams, roars and crying people.“ Another survivor told the newspaper „Wremja“ that the plane started shaking shortly after takeoff. „It looked like there was no control over the plane.“

According to the authorities, the crash occurred in a residential area northeast of the airport. Images distributed by the authorities showed that the machine had broken into at least two parts. Her nose and other front parts were drilled into a two-story building that was badly damaged. According to the first media reports, the images indicated that the machine had apparently not gone up in flames. Rescue teams were deployed in large numbers in the snow on the wreck.

The cause of the accident is the subject of an investigation. Kazakh President Kassim-Schomart Tokajew has already announced that those responsible should be “severely punished in accordance with the law”. His government set up a commission to investigate the causes of the accident. Tokayev promised compensation to the families of the fatalities.
