Venezuela’s Constituent Assembly has overturned the parliamentary immunity of opposition leader Juan Guaidó. The assembly, which stands firmly behind the controversial head of state Nicolás Maduro, unanimously approved a petition from the Supreme Court.

The deputies also approved a decree to continue proceedings against the Opposition Leader for his presumptuousness of office. „The judiciary will, according to the Constitution and the law, initiate the steps required by criminal law,“ said the chairman of the assembly, Diosdado Cabello.

The opposition leader and self-proclaimed transitional president Guaidó had previously said he feared his arrest if he lost his parliamentary immunity. „You can try to kidnap me,“ said the President of Parliament to journalists. „They know how the regime acts.“

It was not until Tuesday that the head of the opposition called the Supreme Court and the Constituent Assembly unlawful. On the vote on his immunity, he said, „This is not even prosecution, this is Inquisition.“ He also urged Maduro to resign. „That will not slow me,“ he told his supporters. „We know the risk, but we will not get off the track.“
