From January to June, 14,603 murders were counted, said the Office of Public Security yesterday (local time). In the same period last year it was 13,985.

Mexico has been struggling with increasing violence for years, mainly because of brutal drug cartels. The left-leaning president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who has been in power since December 2018, shares the economic policies of earlier governments for the increase in capital crimes.

His government wants to fight corruption and inequality in Mexico.“Social policy is very important,“ said Francisco Rivas, director of the National Citizen Observatory, a civilian group monitoring justice and security in Mexico. „But these positive effects will only be visible in the long run.“
