On the eleventh day of protests against the government of Puerto Rico, tens of thousands of people paralyzed the capital San Juan. The protesters and demonstrators blocked a highway yesterday, many shops and offices were closed. It was the biggest demonstration yet to call for the resignation of Governor Ricardo Rossello.

Again there were prominent Puerto Ricans, including the musicians Ricky Martin, Bad Bunny and Residente as well as the former boxing champion Felix Trinidad. In the evening, the police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

The protests were triggered by a corruption scandal in the government and the publication of news from a private chat group by Rossello and eleven confidants in which they disparaged over several people. Many commented that many of the remarks were anti-women and anti-gay as well as disrespectful of the numerous victims of the devastating hurricane „Maria“ in 2017.

Rossello will not compete in election 2020 anymore

There have also been demonstrations against Rossello in other parts of the US external territory, which has been in serious financial crisis for years, as well as in the US and some European cities. Prominent US politicians like Bernie Sanders and senior members of Rossello’s own party joined the resignation demands. US President Donald Trump called Rossello yesterday a dreadful governor.

Several members of the government – including the vice-governor, who was also a member of the chat group – took consequences and vacated their posts. Rossello rejects a resignation so far. However, he said in a televised speech on Sunday that he would not stand for the next election next year. He also resigned as head of his New Progressive Party (PNP). The 40-year-old Rossello has been governing since 2016. He is the son of a former governor.
