The United Arab Emirates (UAE) have announced their candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

„My country will follow the same steps and principles on which it was founded to work with the members of the Council to maintain international peace and security,“ said the Emirates‘ Foreign Minister, Abdullah bin Sajid Al Nahjan, according to media reports yesterday (Local time) when the candidacy was announced during the UN general debate in New York.

The UN General Assembly will elect five new member states as non-permanent members of the Security Council in June next year. In total, there are ten non-permanent members in the most powerful UN body in addition to the five permanent members – China, France, Great Britain, Russia, and the USA, who each remain in office for two years.
